SHINNING LIGHT ON
THE PYRAMID SCHEME
In the 80s Luise Light was the leader of the USDA staffers who worked on the establishment of the first Food Pyramid. She writes that the team worked very hard to come up with dietary guidelines that would guarantee balanced nutrition for anyone who followed them. They even assessed the potential effects of dietary shortfalls on health.
When their work came back after review by the USDA Commissioner they were completely dismayed. The Pyramid that was published had little resemblance to the one that was developed by the scientists and nutritional experts Light had supervised. The wording was changed to favor the use of processed foods. The serving sizes were greatly increased. Today, the Pyramid and subsequent guidelines continue to reflect the agenda of the food lobby at every level with virtually no concern for the actual nutritional needs of the people.
